Best Hikes With Dogs, Inland Northwest

By Craig Romano & Alan Bauer

Mountaineers Books, 228 pages,

100 photos, 75 maps, 75 elevation profiles

 $16.95

For their most recent collaboration, Outdoors NW Trails Editor Craig Romano and contributing photographer Alan Bauer hiked over 75 trails with their canine companions in eastern Washington, the Idaho panhandle, northwest Montana and B.C.’s Okanagan Highlands to help dog lovers find some of the best pooch-friendly hiking destinations east of the Cascades.

The trails that made the cut are hazard-free and easy on the paws (prickly plants and rocky areas are avoided like the plague), mostly exempt from dog-leash requirements and highly shaded to keep your pooch cool. Like most good guidebooks, you’ll find easy-to-read maps, elevation profiles and plenty of enticing photos.

While doggy treats are not included, a handy list of “The Ten Canine Essentials” is. If you’ve never thought of bringing along a canine first-aid kit or dog booties, Romano and Bauer may convince you otherwise. You’ll also learn how to follow canine trail etiquette. (Just as you should be careful not to cut corners on trails, so should your dog).

If you and your dog are bored with the same old local hikes, grab this book and head for the hills – take a good book on tape, let Buster hang his head out the window and you’ll both be glad you made the drive to new territory.
