Burke Gilman updates
This winter, keep an eye out for survey crews, flags and stakes along Seattle’s Burke Gilman Trail along a two-mile stretch through Lake Forest Park from N.E. 145th Street to Log Boom Park, as King County Parks makes its first steps toward new trail renovations and construction that will begin this spring. Redevelopment projects since 2004 have already helped rebuild the trail to provide for the safety of all users by addressing issues such as impaired sightlines and cracks in the pavement. http://www.kingcounty.gov/operations/capitalImprovements/parkscip/projects/ burkegilmantrail.aspx

Lonely Planet loves the San Juans
Looking for a close-to-home getaway this season? Try a bike trip to the secluded coves and bucolic vistas of Washington’s own San Juan Islands. This year, they join rank with Ireland’s County Clare, Italy’s Friuli-Venizia, and the peninsulas of New Zealand in Lonely Planet’s 2010 “World’s Top 10 Cycling Routes.” www.visitsanjuans.com

WTA announces photo winners

Washington Trails Association has announced the winners in its seventh annual Northwest Exposure Photo Contest. The stunning images can be viewed online at www.wta.org. The annual photo contest exhibits the beauty and splendor that can be experienced in Washington’s diverse wild areas, and provides a forum for both aspiring and experienced nature photographers to showcase their work.
Miseao Okada captured the Grand Prize — out of 750 submissions — with her image of a Lupine covered in morning dew on Green Mountain on the west slope of the North Cascades.

Support your state parks
This past September, all Washington state vehicle registrations and tab renewals began including a default (albeit voluntary) donation of $5 to support state parks. Budget cuts last year jeopardized nearly half of Washington’s parks, but this program will help them remain open. Funds raised will defray the costs of park staffing, utilities, operations, maintenance and visitor services. Donations beyond the default $5, of course, are welcome. www.parks.wa.gov/donations
Congrats to Tour de Fatters!
A hearty congratulations to all who took part in New Belgium Brewing Company’s 2009 Tour de Fat! Seattle and Portland were among 11 participating cities. More than 55,000 bike enthusiasts nationwide took part in the costumes, contests, and car-for-bike swap festivities. The Tour raised over a quarter million dollars to help local organizations promote bicycle advocacy and environmental stewardship. www.newbelgium.com.
