Sturtevant’s adds Tacoma, Lynnwood stores

By Andrew Fast

Just in time for winter, Northwest ski-store icon Sturtevant’s is book-ending Seattle with two new Ski Mart stores. Opening this fall are Ski Marts in Tacoma and Alderwood. The pair join a third Ski Mart in Bellevue as well as the flagship Sturtevant’s located in downtown Bellevue.

The new Tacoma Sturtevant’s Ski Mart store features a combination of new, in-season products and discount close-outs from previous seasons. The store will offer the best selection of quality equipment, clothing and accessories for a variety of activities, including skiing, snowboarding, tennis, water skiing, and wakeboarding.  Sturtevant’s Ski Mart will also offer several services, including ski and snowboard tuning and repairs, ski and snowboard rentals, custom boot fitting, and racquet stringing.

The Tacoma store is managed by lifetime South Sound resident, Keith Rollins who has over 20 years of winter sports experience, spending the last nine as manager of Sturtevant’s Ski Mart in Puyallup.  Reach Rollings and his expert staff at (253) 473-1134 or drop by and see them at 2220 South 37th Monday-Friday from 9:30 a.m. – 9 p.m., Saturday 9:30 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Like Tacoma, the Alderwood Ski Mart in Lynnwood will feature a great mix of the newest in-season products, great deals and discounts on previous season products and daily and season rentals. The Lynnwood store is located at 18920 28th Avenue W. www.sturtevants.com.

Grass Roots Outdoor opens in Everett
A new four-season outdoors store recently opened in South Snohomish County. Grass Root Outdoor (GRO) is located on Everett Mall Way, just west of the Everett Mall. It is owned by Brad and Molly Sonne of Mukilteo and operated by Francine Long, a longtime fixture in the area’s ski community.

GRO is open seven days a week: Mon – Fri 10 a.m. – 8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sunday noon –5 p.m. The 6,500-square foot store is a full-service destination with name brands in ski, snowboard and backcountry hard goods, apparel and accessories including name brands Atomic, Salomon, Head, Ride, Bataleon, Line, Armada, Dakine, Smith, Scott, Oakley, 686, Skullcandy, Orage, Bern, Bonfire, FlyLow and Nils. They also offer expert boot-fitting, and ski, board and cross-country ski rentals.

GRO staffers will be onsite at this year’s Seattle SkiFever Show Nov. 20 – 22. (425) 423-0717, www.grosno.com.

‘Pray for Snow’ Party Nov. 18
This is one party you won’t want to miss! Alpine Hut, the family owned ski shop in Seattle’s Magnolia area since 1971, hosts its annual Pray for Snow party from 7 p.m. to midnight, Nov. 18 at Fremont’s Red Door (3401 Evanston Ave N., Seattle). Free to those over 21, snow revelers will enjoy beer specials from Deschutes Brewery and can enter to win a variety of prizes such as skis, ski passes and more. Proceeds benefit OutdoorsForAll. For more information, call Alpine Hut, (206) 284-3575.

Slide won’t affect White Pass
The massive slide that buried a quarter-mile section of Highway 410 in mid-October will not affect travelers heading to and from White Pass Ski Area this year.

The affected highway runs west from Yakima across the Cascades at Chinook Pass, then along the eastern and northern edges of Mount Rainier National Park. A 47-mile section of SR 410 between Lake Tipsoo near the pass and the junction with U.S. 12, five miles west of Naches, was closed. Cross-country skiers and snowmobilers who recreate in this area should be aware of road closures. www.skiwhitepass.com

Ski Fever shows burning hot
Swine flu isn’t the only source of fever this fall. Returning again to warm the snow-lover’s heart are the Portland and Seattle Ski Fever Shows. Featuring great deals on new equipment, a chance to swap old gear, and pick up loads of info from several ski areas and resorts, the Ski Fever Shows are three days of excitement for attendees.

The Portland show will be held at the Expo Center Nov. 6 – 8 and the Seattle show will be in its new location at the Washington State Convention Center Nov. 20 – 22. Retailers will have discount admission coupons or you can go to www.portlandskifever.com to register for coupons and find out more about the shows.
