New Paddling Gear

By Ken Campbell

MSR HyperFlow™ Microfilter and MSR AutoFlow™ Gravity Filter
Although they won’t officially be available until next January, these new offerings from Seattle’s Cascade Designs brand MSR utilize the latest in microfiltration technology known as hollow fiber.

“Hollow fiber technology makes the HyperFlow the smallest, lightest and fastest-pumping of any MSR filter at 3 liters pumped a minute,” says Ben Drury, MSR regional sales representative. “The technology is also available in the AutoFlow Gravity Filter, which is a great fit for paddlers since it allows you to do other things around camp as your water is filtering.”

The AutoFlow filters more than 1.8 liters a minute with no pumping required. Both filter down to .2 microns and are easy to clean in the field with a simple back flush. Either filter will be an excellent addition for any wilderness kayaking adventure.

MSR HyperFlow Microfilter: 7.4 oz, 1000 liter cartridge life, $99.95; MSR AutoFlow Gravity Filter: 10.5 oz , 1500 liter cartridge life, $79.95

Compact Navigation Light
This little number is “selling really well already, even better than we had expected,” says Tim Walsh, owner of Paddlers Supply out of Seattle. The red and green navigation light is “affixed to the kayak with a suction cup base and is intended to provide a higher level of safety for kayakers who are out after dark.” $37.99.
