Buzz - January 2008 - Bike Expo

New location for Group Health Seattle International Bicycle Expo

   The 2008 Group Health Seattle International Bicycle Expo, one of the largest collections of bike sales and organizations in the country under one roof, is scheduled for March 8 – 9 at Cruise Terminal 30. The show features over 150 exhibits of bikes, gear, travel, health and fitness.

    The show, put on by the Cascade Bicycle Club, observes its 20th anniversary in 2008.

    The Expo moves from its previous location at Magnuson Park. Cruise Terminal 30 is located at 2431 E. Marginal Way S., just a half mile south of Safeco Field. There is free parking around the viaduct and some paid parking at the Terminal.

    The event is accessible by bike from all locations near the waterfront trail on Alaskan Way. Clif Bar and Cascade are teaming up to offer a commuter travel mug to the first few hundred cyclists each day who come to the show by bike. Bikers can claim their mug after checking their bike in the bike corral parking area.

    Unlike Magnuson Park’s facility, attendees and exhibitors will enjoy a heated well-lit indoors facility.

    Show hours are 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $7 for adults with a discount for Cascade members. Kids are free.

    More details and an exhibitor listing may be found on the Cascade Bicycle Club Web site, www.cascade.org.

Council passes Seattle Bicycle Master Plan

   The Seattle City Council last November unanimously passed the Seattle Bicycle Master Plan (BMP) — a comprehensive roadmap toward a more bicycle-friendly city. The BMP proposes a network of bikeways to help Seattle bicyclists travel more safely and easily, including bicycle lanes, shared lanes, signed bike routes and bicycle boulevards.

    For three years, the Seattle Department of Transportation worked with Cascade Bicycle Club, Toole Design Group, the Mayors Citizens Advisory Group, citizen organizations, and thousands of members of the community to craft the plan. The plan also identifies funding gaps and opportunities for cooperation between City agencies and citizens’ groups.

Highlights of the Seattle Bicycle Master Plan include:

   • 450 miles of new bicycle facilities in Seattle over the next 10 years. Currently, Seattle currently has 89.6 miles;

   • New bicycle education and encouragement program;

   • Innovative treatments, including bicycle boulevards and green bicycle lanes;

   • Regular bicycle traffic counts;

   • A citywide network of way finding signs.
