Council passes Seattle Bicycle Master Plan
The Seattle City Council last November unanimously passed the Seattle Bicycle Master Plan (BMP) — a comprehensive roadmap toward a more bicycle-friendly city. The BMP proposes a network of bikeways to help Seattle bicyclists travel more safely and easily, including bicycle lanes, shared lanes, signed bike routes and bicycle boulevards.
For three years, the Seattle Department of Transportation worked with Cascade Bicycle Club, Toole Design Group, the Mayors Citizens Advisory Group, citizen organizations, and thousands of members of the community to craft the plan. The plan also identifies funding gaps and opportunities for cooperation between City agencies and citizens’ groups.
Highlights of the Seattle Bicycle Master Plan include:
• 450 miles of new bicycle facilities in Seattle over the next 10 years. Currently, Seattle currently has 89.6 miles;
• New bicycle education and encouragement program;
• Innovative treatments, including bicycle boulevards and green bicycle lanes;
• Regular bicycle traffic counts;
• A citywide network of way finding signs.
