Ed Viesturs presents at REI April 10
On Thursday, April 10, the Seattle REI will host a free, interactive presentation and book signing with Ed Viesturs, the author of “No Shortcuts to the Top,” the national bestselling book about his 18-year quest to climb all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks without supplemental oxygen. The presentation is free and will begin at 7 p.m.
“It’s always a pleasure to come home and do a presentation in Seattle,” says Viesturs. “The past two years have been incredibly busy and I’m excited to share some of my recent adventures with fellow Seattle adventurers and talk about what’s on the horizon for me.”
In addition to his mountaineering quests, Viesturs will describe his experience with renowned polar explorer Will Steger during their 1,200 mile Global Warming 101 Expedition to Canada’s Baffin Island in February 2007. Viesturs will return to Baffin Island next month for a 150-mile sledge hauling expedition, intended to further build awareness about the effects of climate change in the Artic, and serve as a training trip for an upcoming expedition to the South Pole.
Admission to ‘An Evening with Ed Viesturs’ is free, however, donations will be collected to support Global Warming 101. For more information, visit www.yoursole.com or call (206) 223-1944. |

Oregon Walk + Bike Challenge Month now registering schools
Oregon Walk + Bike to School opened registration last week for the first-ever Walk + Bike to School Challenge Month focusing on elementary school students throughout the Portland metro area. Students will be challenged to walk or bike to school as much as they can over the month of May.
Sign-ups for schools are open until the end of April at www.walknbike.org.
The students will be competing against other elementary schools as well as against Portland State University students who are having their own Bike Commute Challenge in May. There will be a drawing for prizes during the month culminating June 8 at the North Park Blocks at PSU. The top prize is the BTA’s award-winning Bicycle Safety Education class for up to 32 students.
During the month of May, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance will host weekly workshops on safe family commuting by bicycle and foot. The event is a family-focused spin-off of the 12-year-old Bicycle Commute Challenge, an annual friendly competition in September for Oregon and SW Washington companies to see who can bike to work more (www.bikecommutechallenge.com).
Research shows that over 60 percent of students walked to school 30 years ago; the national average is now less than 2 percent.
