This gorgeous color book by Outdoors NW Trails Editor Craig Romano explores the Upper Columbia region of northeast Washington where the Cascades meet the Rockies east of the Okanogan River. The book reveals the surprising coalition of people – hunters, hikers, loggers, business owners, Native people, and more who are united in their love of the land and working to protect and restore it.
Through interviews with residents of the area, Romano paints a picture of a new kind of conversation plan, one that preserves the health of the ecosystem while sustaining a viable rural economy and lifestyle for future generations of residents. The book is actually the focal point for a campaign for Conservation Northwest to introduce the Columbia Highlands Initiative which calls for a long-term plan for restoration, conservation, sustainable forestry and for designating some of the first new wilderness areas in the state since 1984. The book also features selected hikes, drives and points of interest in the region.
