Erik Tonkin, Cyclocross Racer 11/05

   It takes a little bit of a masochist to be a cyclocross racer.

   The courses are muddy and rough, and literally change with the weather. The rider must bike through these conditions but also dismount and run, jumping over obstacles and slogging through soupy mud with their bike slung over one shoulder. Terry Jordan, Long Distance Runner
and Fundraiser 10/05

    When Terry Jordan’s 5-year-old daughter Emily died from leukemia in 1998, a group of athletes ran Ironman Canada in honor of the young girl’s life.

   “We [Jordan and her husband, Bob] were very moved by that. Here were 30 people who had never done an Ironman and they wanted to do it in honor of her,” Jordan said.

   When Chris MacDonald, a 32-year-old from Mukilteo, Wash., and Copenhagen, Denmark, heard Outside magazine describe the Insight Race Across America (RAAM) as the “World’s Toughest Sporting Event,” he couldn’t resist the challenge.
    After two years of training through the rolling hills of Denmark, in the mountains of the Northwest and on a CompuTrainer indoor bike, MacDonald faced RAAM.

If you think that’s challenging, imagine racing the entire distance in a wheelchair.Steve Hubbell, a 32-year-old handcyclist from Seattle, will race in the New York City Marathon in November, his third marathon in the last two years.
