Endless Summer – NW Style

By Carolyn Price

Our hottest summer on record is in the books. With temps soaring over 100 degrees for several days in late July and 26 straight days without rain, it was a summer that opened up endless outdoor opportunities. We were California-dreamin’ everyday — on our own Northwest turf.

We stayed close to home (a Staycation? Daycation? Playcation?) and enjoyed Northwest play areas during a real summer. For much of this time, our family was home barely long enough to get our laundry done before setting off on yet another adventure.

We spent the 4th of July weekend in 102-degree Leavenworth where we hiked up their ski hill for the local theatre group’s production of the Sound of Music. We camped at Fort Flagler on Marrowstone Island in mid-July where the red-hot sky produced one of the most stunning sunsets I’d seen in a long time. We marveled over the sand-castle creations during Indianola Days a week later. Days passed along the shore at Matthews Beach on Lake Washington as we blissfully snacked on fresh-picked blueberries from Mercer Island.

One of the best trips was to the Sequim/Port Angeles area on the Olympic Peninsula. There we strolled the beach in the morning and capped the day with a scenic hike to Hurricane Hill in Olympic National Park.

On Sept. 12 I’ll find myself on a Washington state ferry to Friday Harbor where I’ve been invited to be a guest speaker at the San Juan Island Library.

The endless summer continues — I think I could get used to this!
