The Dirtworld.com Adventure Racing Team (DART) will forge ahead this August as the only team of all Pacific Northwest athletes to compete in the Adventure Racing World Championships this year. The team is comprised of Ryan Fleming, Ryan Van Gorder and Cyril Jay-Rayon, all of Seattle, and Virginie Calme of Portland.
Starting Aug. 1, 2004, the top 60 international adventure racing teams will set out into the wilderness of Western Newfoundland, Canada, for six days and nights of continuous trekking, paddling and mountain biking.
Jay-Rayon, DART team captain, said this year's race promises to raise the standards of adventure racing. It is organized by Frontier Adventure Racing, the same company that staged the Raid the North Extreme, which DART competed in last year.
"We found it to be one of the most challenging and adventurous races we've ever done," said Jay-Rayon. "Every team's perseverance and ingenuity is sure to be tested because of the race's emphasis on real wilderness navigation."
As far as his hopes for his team's performance, he said that for a bunch of athletes with full-time jobs in their second year as a team, qualifying for the World Championships alone was a feat. DARTÕs season is off to a good start as they
recently won the first race in the TRIOBA 24 Hour Adventure Race Series.
