Over 65 live bands, thousands of enthusiastic volunteers and a relatively flat and scenic course are just some of the reasons that the Ultimate Guide to Marathons has called Portland’s “one of the premiere marathons in the United States.”
On Sunday, Oct. 1, the City of Roses will host the 35th annual Portland Marathon, attracting an estimated 9,000 runners, walkers and wheelchair participants. Over 75 percent of registered participants are expected to complete the 26.4-mile race, and thousands more will join the marathon’s other events, the Five-Miler, 10K Mayor’s Walk and the Kids Marafun 2-Mile Run.
This year, the Portland Marathon will also host the Nordic Walking World Championships. Nordic walkers of all levels and abilities will complete the same course as other marathon racers, but with fitness walking poles. The Portland Marathon is the first marathon to officially recognize Nordic walking as a category, which is fitting since Portland was recently named the country’s Best U.S. City for Walking by the American Podiatric Medical Association.
Athletes have until Sept. 15 to register for all marathon events. The fee for the marathon run or walk is $85. Packet pick-up will coincide with the Portland Marathon Sports and Fitness Expo, Friday, Sept. 29 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 30 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
