Celebration of Life for Jerry Baker, Godfather of Northwest Cycling, this Saturday

October 13, 2015

A Celebration of Life for Jerry Baker, the legendary Godfather of bicycling in the Northwest, is scheduled for 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 17, Magnuson Park Hanger 30.

Jerry, a resident of Seattle, passed away suddenly from Acute Myelogenous Leukemia on Sept. 10 at age 73.

Jerry was a founding member of the Cascade Bicycle Club, Washington Bikes, the Marymoor Velodrome and Northwest cyclocross. Notably, he was the only person to have ridden every Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic (STP) since its inception in 1979.

He was so popular in the local bicycle scene that friends created a Facebook page called “Jerry Baker is Everywhere” to post pictures of him at coffee shops or along the road.

Jerry’s passion for bicycling was so great that he began logging his mileage in 1965 with a goal of bicycling 220,000 – the distance between the earth and the moon. He was about 95 percent of the way there with only 12,000 miles to go when he died.
