Carolyn Price

Carolyn Price is the founder and publisher of Price Media, Inc. which publishes OutdoorsNW, NW Cyclist and NW SNOW Guide magazines.

A journalism nut all her life, Carolyn founded a neighborhood newspaper in Seattle at age 10 and hasn’t looked back. Upon graduating from Western Washington University in 1977, she went on to become the first women’s sports editor of a newspaper in Washington state when she took the position at the Lynden Tribune in northwest Washington.

In 1988, she founded Price Media, Inc. and has helped shape the business over the years into a full media services company offering print, digital, social media and custom publishing.

A Seattle native and graduate of Ingraham High School and journalism graduate from Western Washington University, Carolyn enjoys growing vegetables in her backyard, loves the mindlessness of deadheading rhody’s and can usually be found with a camera hanging around her neck photographing anything outside. She has played in two national softball tournaments and enjoys all outdoor sports except for mud-wrestling.

Greg Price

Greg Price is co-owner and vice-president of Price Media, the other half of the dynamic brother-sister publishing team. You’ll find Greg heading up different departments: Finance, Circulation, and Operations, but he can also be found working with those in Sales and Marketing. Seattle is home to Greg, though he’s traveled and worked in the Bering Sea, Hawaii and in Japan.

What he likes best about his home town are the different shades of green and blue that surround the city. He’s a pretty good cook, gets his hands dirty with building projects around the house and enjoys ski and camping trips with his wife and two sons.

Additionally, Greg is a Principle Faculty at City University, instructing courses in Marketing, Communications and Leadership. He earned a BA in economics from the University of Washington, his MBA from the University of Phoenix and is now in the process of earning his doctorate from City University of Seattle.

John “Raz” Rezell

Editor/Social Media Director

Born and raised in Wisconsin, Raz has visited 44 states, lived in seven, and calls the great Northwest and Oregon his home. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, his climb up the newspaper ladder led him from small-town journalism at the Jefferson County Daily Union in Fort Atkinson, WI, across the Mississippi River to the Dubuque Telegraph Herald and culminated at the major metro daily The Orange County Register in Santa Ana, CA. At The Register he created a weekly cycling column and focused on off-beat sports like beach volleyball, surfing, running, triathlons — any assignment that might include bringing suntan lotion and getting outdoors.

After a freelance career establishing himself as the premiere cycling journalist in the U.S., he became editor of VeloNews magazine. Later he started the e-magazine bike.com, and eventually came full circle back to newspapers as an outdoor columnist for The Register-Guard in Eugene, OR. He spent five years as director of marketing for Bike Friday and most recently was executive editor of SportsEvents Magazine.

Raz, who has also self-published three ebooks, lives in northern Oregon with his family.

Chuck Schultz

Art Director

Chuck Schultz is our Art Director, Graphic Designer and Production Artist. His first issue of OutdoorsNW was Jan/Feb 2007. Chuck is responsible for everything graphic at Price Media including editorial design and layout for all publications, ad design, web site updates and ads. He also produces the company’s E-newsletter twice a month and a digital edition for each magazine that’s published.

Chuck has been an artist all his life, perhaps due to all those rainy days growing up in Seattle. But as all Northwest kids will tell you, just because it’s raining, doesn’t mean you have to stay indoors. Chuck never cancelled a camping trip due to weather. “That’s why they make rain gear—right?” He has been both a long- and short-distance hiker. He spent six months on the Pacific Crest Trail in 1979 but now prefers shorter hikes, mostly to Washington’s coastal beaches. “I’ve never seen a more impressive sunset than at Cape Alava or Shi Shi Beach.”

Another “north-end” kid, Chuck went to Shorecrest High School, followed by the acclaimed and prestigious Advertising Art Program at Seattle Central Community College. In addition to his gig at Price Media, Chuck also teaches students how to use software applications for graphic artists as part-time Associate Faculty at Shoreline Community College.

PJ Watanabe

Senior Media Manager

PJ has been an avid outdoor enthusiast since childhood. A lifelong soccer player, BSA Eagle Scout, mountain biker, survivalist, fisherman, and swimmer, he enjoys all seasonal adventure in the Pacific Northwest. A UW Geography graduate, specializing in Urban Social & Political Processes, PJ is surprisingly (and admittedly) terrible with directions.

Customer obsession and entrepreneurial spirit have guided PJ through many successful careers in marketing, sales, advertising, tourism, and account management. Prior to arriving at OutdoorsNW, he owned and operated the consignment operation, “Bargain Hunter.” What began as a side hobby in college, selling video games on Ebay for book and beer money, evolved into a prosperous full-time business venture. Acquiring and restoring “hidden gems” at bulk auctions, estate sales, antique and second-hand shops across Puget Sound, PJ has hosted cyber storefronts on Ebay, Amazon, Craigslist, and Offerup.

PJ is passionate about music of all genres, and has racked up over 30 years of noise complaints on his drum set. “Loud” is the only volume setting on his stereo. He spends his days outside of the office developing healthy, tasty recipes, traveling, and has rescued and fostered dozens of dogs in Arizona and Washington state. He and his wife, Rena have two dogs of their own, Tango and Peanut, who keep them entertained, on their toes, and out of the house!

Devon Haight

Event Specialist

For the several years, Devon Haight has been the face staffing the OutdoorsNW booth at events distributing magazines and encouraging the participants. A four-season outdoors enthusiast, he is an avid mountain biker riding trails all around the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Devon is also a runner participating in many of the 5k events around the area. In the winter he can be found snowboarding runs from Whistler to Mt. Hood. Devon grew up in Bothell, Wash.

Megumi Price

Administrative Assistant, Distribution

Megumi Price is the unsung hero behind the scenes at Price Media. She distributes our magazines, does the A/P, A/R, data input, filing and whatever else is needed to plug holes around the office. She is the third of the Price family to work at the company; her husband is publisher Greg Price.

Megumi is a native of Tokyo, Japan, is bilingual and writes her staff-meeting notes in Kanji.

Yitka Winn

Contributing Columnist

Yitka Winn is OutdoorsNW’sOn the Run” columnist. She originally joined the staff of OutdoorsNW in 2009 when she first moved from the Midwest to the Pacific Northwest in a quest to bring more mountains into her life. After an interlude spent living in the high mountains of southwest Colorado, she recently moved back to Washington State and plans to never leave again, ever. Its sparkling bodies of water and jungles of moss, ferns, fog and drizzle will always feel like home.

Currently, she lives in Seattle and works as a freelance writer, editor and adventure journalist. An avid runner for the past 15 years, Yitka has traveled worldwide to run trails everywhere from Iceland to Patagonia to the French Alps. She’s especially fond of running 100-mile races in the mountains, hiking in the rain, going on hut trips, baking and eating cookies, snuggling up with a good book, riding her Swiss Bob sled at high speeds, skate skiing, snowboarding, drinking dark boozy beer, and doing yoga. (Not necessarily in that order.)
